HRC

The Human Rights Council (HRC) is a new body for Arrowhead Model United Nations.

AMUNC’s HRC will be larger than the Security Council but smaller than the four GA committees (seeCommittees). The UN’s HRC has 47 member states (see Countries). AMUNC’s HRC will be composed of the subset of those 47 countries that are represented by AMUNC institutions (28 as of this writing, if all institutions have appointed a delegate to the HRC).

There will be two important differences between the HRC and the other five bodies at AMUNC 2012.

First, in contrast to other AMUNC bodies, the HRC will not be considering resolutions submitted in advance of the conference. It will, instead, write its resolutions on-site (delegates may nevertheless wish to draft an appropriate resolution as a way of preparing).

Second, there will be only two topic areas for HRC resolutions. Those two topic areas are

  • rights of indigenous peoples

  • human rights, political rights, and democracy

(especially relevant for those interested in recent and ongoing events in the Middle East (Syria especially) and North Africa).

Rules of the Human Rights Council are an adapted version of the rules that apply to the main committees of the General Assembly.
